Posting Images

A picture is worth a thousand words, so we encourage you to post pictures to go along with anything you want to talk about. In order to post an image, the image must be "hosted" - in other words, it's gotta live somewhere on the internet.

1) Go to ImageShack which is a free image hosting service - http://imageshack.us/

2) Click on the "Browse" button and find the image you want hosted.

Image

3) Click on "Start Upload."

Image

4) In the "Direct link to image" box, highlight the entire website address (also called "URL"). Copy the URL; for a PC you can simply hit CTRL-C.

Image

5) Back in the post where you would like to place the image, click on the "IMG" button.

6) Between "", paste the URL; for the PC you can simply hit CTRL-V.

Image

7) Hit "Submit" and you will see your image in your post.

Image

Don't worry if your image is pretty big. It will be resized when you post it and viewers can click on a little magnifying glass on the upper left corner of the image to enlarge it.

However, I would avoid using images straight out of your digital camera. These are referred to as "raw" images and are huge in terms of file size. You will want to use an image editing program to "optimize" the image shrinking the file size down. If you don't have an image editing program, there are a lot of free optimization sites as well such as Image Optimizer which shrinks the file size and allows you to change the dimensions.

Rob wrote:If you want to post images in the forum, please optimize the image and use a separate hosting service. There are many free, online services out there, and the following is just one method using “ImageShack”:

 • Open a new browser window and go to ImageShack.
 • Click in “Browse” and find the image on your computer.
 • Click the “Resize Image?” option.
 • Using the dropdown menu, select “640x480 (for message boards)” option.
 • Click on “Host It!”
 • At the bottom, click on “+ Show Advanced Linking.”
 • An additional box classified as “Direct Link to Image” will appear.
 • Highlight and copy the entire URL in this box.
 • Go back to the browser window where your forum post is.
 • Above the post window, click on the “Img” button.
 • Paste the copied URL between the “” tags.

Doesn't work any more. when I try to post it says I can't exceed 550 pixels wide

Han Solo, pm me a link to your oversized gif (host it on ImageShack) and I will compress it for you.

Anyone else with some compression or sizing issues please feel free to do the same.
