Bad knee joints

Dec 15 10, 5:01 pm

Ive got bad knee's (grinding and painfully stiff feeling in the knee) and I tweaked them out surfing cardiff awhile back and they are still hurting. Im currently doing acupuncture, but has anyone else experienced this and what did you to help it??

what's your sports background? current athletic activities? age? overall health? on any meds? have you had your knee mri'd for injuries?

i personally have been tolerating numerous joint issues resulting from years of sports. i now find that simply stretching all of the major muscles and joints before surfing totally helps keep the pain down and the flexibility going. surfing use to be my only sport that i didn't do a presesh stretch for. dunno why. i swear by accupuncture for reducing swelling and pain. also, meds such as cholesterol pills are known to cause arthritic symptoms and muscle atrophy in some people.

as for severe joint injuries such as knee injuries... i believe after the swelling is significantly reduced, a few weeks of rest was always prescribed after a deep bruise, strain or slight tear. of course, assuming you don't have a major tear.

hope this helps.

They got messed up pretty good skateboarding and racing jetskis when I was younger. With the acupuncture and surfing a lot less its slowly getting better but really really slowly. Im traveling home for 16 days and plan to just rest it that whole time and come back to Cali with a vengeance

I have a bad feeling Ill be in this boat too.. I already get pretty achey with the knees if they sit still for too long. I used to skate every single day from like 6th grade through highschool. :(

I have no advice for the cure though, but Im interested in finding it as well. I hate that internal knee pain.

I get some pain from bumping my knees or just below, doesn't take much. I had or have Osgood-Schlatter Disease. I had problems with pain when I was young from it. I guess I'm one of the lucky few "Only rarely does Osgood-Schlatter disease persist beyond the growing stage".
It can be painful at times after surfing if I bump my knees or just below to much. It makes a nasty looking bump under the knee. I have it on both. The pain goes away in time but comes right back if not rested a little. The bumps don't go away though. They have some size to them again after surfing the past year & 1/2 haha. I had forgot about it till I started surfing again. No fix for it unless I get them cut off :/ . This getting older is quite the challenge :D I worry more about my spine (lower back) for now.
You gota have working knees for sure to surf. I hope it goes away for ya Style. I like the attitude "come back to Cali with a vengeance" Don't go doing any twisting laybacks HAHA!

does kinda stink getting older unless you have great genetics. i don't. no cushion in both knees so grinding pain from track, b & vball wear and tear. gout disrupted my surfing for a few months earlier this year. can't partake in my beer ingestion hobby anymore. left shoulder and right elbow are always sore from hyperextending them a couple of years back while getting back into surfing. better stretches have really helped. and so have these floaty boards!

quite a few ol' buds have no issues like these. wish i had their sturdy genetics.

you know you are old when you own practically every type/style of custom braces and crutches. i know i am but not giving in to a sedentary lifestyle yet. haha

Had some acupuncture today and got some ancient chinese mixture juice spread on my knees, smells pretty bad but there isnt any debilitating pain, going to Minnesota for 2 weeks over the holidays so I'll just rest them there, do more acupuncture and physical therapy. I plan on swimming a lot at the local fitness center to keep up my paddling strength and endurance, and play a lot of Kelly Slaters pro surfer!!!
